Unit 3
Exam Section B: Case Study
Identities and the Media
When you come back to school, you will have decided what identity that is portrayed in the media that you will study. There are lots to choose from, e.g.:
Scottish National identity in the media
Jewish identity in the media
homosexuality in the media
black identity in the media
Palestinian identity in the media
Disabled people in the media
Elderly in the media etc.
You must look at how that identity is portrayed across the media.
Below are links to articles that you may find useful (particularly relevant to the study of Jewish and Palestinian identities in the media as this is a hugely relevant topic at this time. Remember that you should be studying topics that are relevant and current.)

Programmes which portray Jewish identity: The Honourable Woman (We watched the first episode of this in class).
Above is an example of where you would start once you had decided on an identity that you are going to study, and how it is portrayed in the media.
Take the easy route and choose an identity that is in the media currently. This is why Jewish Identity/ Palestinian Identity and Scottish National Identity are good examples as they are current. However, as we discussed in class - there are lots of possibilities. Just ensure you return in September with an identity that you have already begun to study.
For the exam, you will need to have a thorough understanding of the ways the identity is represented in the media with lots of textual examples.
Below is a reminder of when we studied the representation of the elderly in the media:

More help will be posted before we return to school. Keep checking the blog, and keep informed by checking media. You should be immersing yourself in media daily as an A-Level student.
